Crochet in the Wild

I'm not sure how I feel about handmade crocheted items being sold at Target.  Chickee spotted these the other day. I like that there is a demand for crochet but I wonder who did the stitching and did they get adequate compensation.

How do you feel about it?

That's really weird. $7.99 for a diaper cover? I doubt that the crocheter is making money that's worth their time.

It doesn't look like he/she is making as much money as he/she ought to be making on those items, but if he/she wants to do it, then I'm glad that there is enough demand to provide the opportunity.

I am happy that crochet is becoming more and more popular, to the point where very obviously crocheted items are sold in many stores, but ultimately what is pictured hurts everyone except the store at prices that low. It hurts the person who made the item who likely lives in a third world country and is being severely underpaid. It hurts designers who may end up have their designs knocked-off by a large distributor in a foreign country with different copyright laws. It hurts the crafters whose craft is being devalued. Finally, it hurts consumers who will come to believe that these prices are reasonable and who may pass up other opportunities to buy fairly priced handmade items.

I seriously doubt that person received their fair share of compensation. Unfortunately if they are made outside of the USA the people don't always get paid properly and that makes me sad.

Not to mention, why would people go to Etsy or small business site and pay 20.00 when they can just grab it cheap while doing their shopping?
