Crochet Worthy?

We all know it... time and money are short. So how do we decide whether or not to spend our limited time and money on a crochet gift for someone? Are they crochet worthy? Will the recipient understand the time and effort put into the gift? Will the recipient care for the project and use it without felting it? Does the recipient, in general, seem to appreciate your crochet talent? While you may want to make a special crochet project for a loved one, he or she might not be 'crochet worthy' and you can save your time and yarn stash and instead they may really be just as happy with a store-bought gift.

However, when you find someone who is truly crochet worthy, that really is a gift isn't it?

Some stitchers call themselves, "selfish stitchers" (knitters, crocheters, etc.). I get it. In the absence of crochet worthy people to crochet for, it's easier for everyone if a stitcher doesn't give away her stitched projects. As hard as it is to believe, some unusual and rare people do not care for yarn/thread handmade gifts (GASP!) These people are to be loved anyway despite their eccentricities. Respect yourself. Respect your craft. Don't give stitched handmade love in yarn form to those who are not crochet worthy.

25 reasons why I love crochet

I don't remember who started this challenge, but here goes, in no particular order....

1. I love yarn
2. I love making something where there was nothing before.
3. I love making something for someone and knowing that every inch flowed through my fingers.
4. I love the repetition
5. I love that it is easy to fix
6. I love how dimensional it is.
7. I love that crochet hooks come in lots of fun colors and shapes and materials
8. I love that it is such a simple craft - just yarn and hook.
9. I love that it is portable.
10. I love that with simple yarn and hook great results can abound.
11. I love that when I crochet in public people respond with, "My (insert loved one's name here) used to crochet!"
12. I love that it is simple enough that a child can learn.
13. I love that it is sophisticated enough that it still can keep my attention as a grown-up
14. I love that it allows me to have a career while I am at home with the kids.
15. I love that it allows me a creative outlet.
16. I love that you can follow a pattern with great results or do your own thing.
17. I love that it has transcended generations.
18. I love that it has continued to evolve and you can do traditional or contemporary things.
19. I love that some artists choose to use it as real art and at the same time, it is used as T.P. roll cover! What a continuum.
20. I love that it gives me a feeling of being productive while I am watching tv.
21. I love that it can be both functional and decorative at the same time.
22. I love that when you receive crochet as a gift, you know it was handmade.
23. I love that you can crochet with almost any fiber or anything really.
24. I love that you can crochet inexpensively or you can crochet luxuriously... it's your choice!
25. I love crochet because it is often a craft that is shared with others... within families, within guilds, within charity communities.

Wow, that was easier than I thought it would be.

Joan Avasconcelos

Here's some interesting crochet sculpture! It is fun to see artists who use crochet. See her work here, choose "work" and it will give you her work organized by year.

Also, here's an update on our "cliff". The County came and "repaired it". The photos don't do it justice. It's probably a good 60 foot drop pretty much straight down.
I just wish they had planted some trees with deep root systems for prevention in addition to remediation.

Conversation Piece

Have you ever wanted to create a crocheted thing for fun? That has no function? I'm such a practical person that this following project is quite a departure for me!
this is a Sc square, but I crocheted over the top of 24 gauge wire. It's a thin yarn, like a 2. some obscure yarn, kinda stiff. I'll look it up if you're interested.
And after it was done, I began to play! Smooshing it and bending it, flattening it again.
I asked my husband if he wanted to take it to work to put on his desk, but he said it would get lost.

Then he said, "what is it?"

I said, "I dunno, a decoration." What do you think? It's now sitting on top of my TV.
