Hexagon Thing CAL

Here's the first project I've seen from the Hexagon Thing CAL!  It's by MeanderingHome on Ravelry. She gave me permission to share her headband made of the join-as-you-go Hexagons.

She writes:

I really don’t need to start another project right now, but the concept of a CAL with a design-your-own-project twist really appealed to me. Right now I’m not sure where I’m going with this. I thought the Hexagon looked dainty, so I picked hooked it in thread.
I was planning to make this headband 3 motifs wide, but I didn’t like where that was going. I ended up cutting out several motifs, and settling on one row.
After joining the motifs, I created ties by chaining 4 and slip stitching to each point on the hexagon. I then went over this with 2 rows of double crochet (8 dcs accross). I thinned this down to 3 dc (4 including turning chain) by 3 slip stitches when I got to the end of the 2nd row of 8 dcs. I did 16 rows of 3 dcs. This is how the hexagon headband is tied. I should probably take a picture of this part.

Thanks for joining in!  I'd love to see more Fasten offs.  Rav Mail, FB or email me at ellen @ GoCrochet Dot com.   Tomorrow there will be a book review and GIVEAWAY!

ACK! and Hexagon CAL

Two projects have to go out the door TODAY.    I hope to be back with you tomorrow.

;)
Along the CAL front, Meandering Home wrote:
I’ve made a few motifs so far and after joining them I know what I’m going to make with them. At this point I still want to keep the finished product secret.
Right now I haven’t been working on my hexagons as much as I would like because I’m getting paid to work on another project, and with a deadline looming over my head, it’s hard to find time for “me-crochet.”
With that said, I really like the hexagon motif and am having fun with it. I think my end idea will come together nicely. :-)

Hexagon Thing CAL

8 people have voted that they have 'no idea what to make'.  Let's encourage them by revealing some of your plans.  If you know what you are making or need some feedback about an idea you have, let's talk about it! Leave comments here or on the Ravelry group Hexagon Thing CAL thread.

HaleyZim already went first sharing:
It took me forever to choose a yarn! I must have tried 10 at least until I finally settled on the one I wanted to use. I ended up blocking several motifs in different yarns before I made my choice for the one that gave me the drape I was looking for. Now I’m not generally a fan of motifs simply because I am really super extremely lazy when it comes to sewing in ends. Having said that, this little bugger has me hooked! I have another project that I MUST finish in the next week and I can’t seem to get to it. The Little Hexes as my daughter P1 calls them have a hold on me! Wish that meant that my secret project was progressing nicely but alas it is not. Not because the hexes are difficult but because I keep changing my mind on how to design my project - lol! And not being an experienced motif joiner, there have been some growing pains in that department.
Ok, I “showed” you my progress. Now it’s your turn :o)

Hexagon Thing CAL

It's up! It's ready, It's beautiful! Thanks to my tech editor and my stitch diagramist, it's really, really nice.

So what are you going to do with it?  LOL?  While some of you may choose little projects, some of you may choose bigger projects... If you have a hint for what you are making... leave a comment with a hint!  I'll start a poll that you can vote on your progess... also, as you progress, I think you are able to change your vote, right?  If you are on Ravelry, the project is up for you to make a project page.  If you are not on Ravelry and want me to post photos of your progress, you can send me photos. My email address is in the right sidebar of this page.  If you are on Craftsy.com you can post a photo there.

Book Review

Designer, Kathy North did a review of my book for me! Check it out here.  I hope you had a great 4th of July weekend! It's going to take us a few days to recover from too much! Too much sun and not enough water (to drink) and too much food and too many parties and not enough sleep!

Progress is being made on the Hexagon Thing CAL!  I'll keep you posted! We're getting closer, so get your ideas thought through and dive into your stash.  YES, ANY smooth yarn will work, even thread!  Your motifs will just be bigger or smaller depending on which yarn you choose.  I'm sure you could make it out of textured yarn too, but you'd probably loose much of the shape.

Hexagon Thing CAL

Ok, here's the proposed Hexagon. Do you like it? Does that make you want to change your poll answer one way or another? I think you can change your vote.  The instructions are currently with the stitch diagramist getting a drawing made.

What do you want to make? Wait! Don't tell me!  It could be a scarf or skirt, or a cowl, you could make a baby poncho, or a grown-up poncho or garland, or an ornament, or.... use your imagination!

We'll start the CAL, as soon as possible. I'll keep you posted on when the pattern PDF is available for purchase. In the meantime... will you use your scraps? will you buy new yarn?  What colors will you choose? Will you choose multi-colors or a solid?  If you use wool, remember the felting factor.  The swatch is in 100% wool, worsted weight, Universal Deluxe.  Will you use worsted weight? What about a bigger or smaller fiber? Oh! what about thread and make it a necklace?  Or sport weight and make it a cuff....  It's up to YOU!  And it's a Mystery to me!  Once the pattern is up, you can start a project page on Ravelry and start uploading photos.

Can you "see" the hexagon shape? Make a imaginary line from the long "points" all the way around and the outline is a hexagon.  What does it look like to you? A flower? A snowflake? Will that influence your yarn and color choice? Oh this is so exciting!

How about a CAL?

Ok, I've got a fun little hexagon motif.  It's "join as you go".  Do you want to see it or do you want it to be a MYSTERY CAL?

I'm thinking that I'll show you the motif, but the Mystery will be on ME!  You decide what the project will be and it will be a surprise to me!

I'll provide a stitch diagram, written instructions, a photo of the motif and offer suggestions on what you can make, but it will be up to you.  You can use your stash, you can go crazy with colors.  We'll talk about it in the Ravelry group and here. You can post your photos on Ravelry, We'll call it "Design your own Hexagon Thing CAL".

I'll put a poll in the side bar.
