What was I thinking? Serene Meadow

The lacy edged Serene Meadow blanket is in the current Summer issue of Crochet! Magazine. It is stitched in Red Heart's "With Love" yarn.  The blanket itself is an easy meditative double crochet field.  The edging is where it shows it's pizazz.

I was thinking that I wanted to do a blanket where the EDGING was the focal point for a change. Generally, my work tends to focus on the interior of the blanket and I often don't want to call too much attention to the border because of all the interesting goings on in the middle.  This time, I wanted to play with the reverse.  Because of this, I planned the edging first and calculated the math of the interior based on what I needed for the first row of edging. If I could do anything differently, I would have done the edging BIGGER.  On the swatch the edging seemed huge, but compared to the finished blanket, I wish I had made it a good 2-3" bigger.

What do you think? Which is the feature you focus on when choosing a project to make? ... the interior or the edging/border?  Do you love a great edge or is the edge an afterthought?

Because I enjoy simple things, I like to focus on the edging. This blanket is beautiful! Very simple, but elegant!

I think it's beautiful. The whole blanket is simple or charming at first glance, but as you look closer you see the skill and time that went into it.

I agree with Shannon -- it's beautiful and simple. But I can see where a larger border would make it even more lovely. I wouldn't reduce the size of the blanket itself, because I like big ones, but I would add a few rows to the border. Wouldn't that be pretty easy to do?

I don't understand your gauge the RH with love said Crochet: 14sc x 14r = 4in/10cm on size K10.5/6.5mm hook. On your pattern you state that 13 dc = 5" on size K. Please explain. I would love to crochet this. It is gorgeous!!

Thanks everyone!
Hi Donna, the hook and gauge specified on the yarn label is a guideline. Every stitcher is different, some crochet tightly, some crochet more loosely. When you make your gauge swatch, you can compare your unique gauge to mine (stated in my pattern) to see if your finished product will be the same size as the pattern. A designer chooses a hook that will give the kind of drape we want for each individual pattern. Some projects we want loose and drapey, (a shawl for example) other projects we want tight and dense (amigurumi for example). HTH

I don't quite understand the pattern, I really love the design of the throw too! I just did the first row for the middle part, and it looks really tiny. like, really really tiny. Does it grow after you keep doing it..? I mean naturally it's small because it's the first row, but the whole thing just looks really short.

I noticed this one in the magazine, and the lovely edging. Edging has always been an afterthought for me. I did not realize until I started designing for others the importance of planning ahead for the edging. When it was just for me I could fudge and skip a couple extra stitches.
