Here's the final pattern that I have in Chain-Free Crochet Made Easy. In the book, they have it styled as a basket around a planter. It is in strips, then woven tightly so that it stands. I have been intrigued by layering of pieces for a long time, but haven't found too many satisfactory applications for it.
I like this - I shall have to find a reason to make a basket now, to try it out!
